Walking 12,000 steps every day sounds simple until you actually start doing it. Once you’re consistently covering several miles on sidewalks, roads, treadmills, or around town, you quickly realize that your shoes can make or break the experience.
A shoe that feels comfortable for a 20-minute stroll may not feel nearly as good after several hours on your feet. Cushioning, stability, breathability, weight, fit, and traction all become much more important when you’re taking thousands of steps every day.
I’ve narrowed down these 11 specific shoe models that have stood out during my walks. The goal isn’t to find the most expensive shoe or the shoe with the thickest sole, it’s to find a shoe that feels good step after step.

1. HOKA Bondi 9 – Best for Maximum Cushioning
If maximum cushioning is what you’re looking for, the HOKA Bondi 9 is one of the first shoes I’d consider for 12k-step days.
The Bondi 9 has a substantial cushioned platform that helps make long periods of walking feel more protected. It also has a rocker-style geometry that encourages a smooth transition from heel to toe.
This is particularly appealing if most of your walking happens on hard surfaces such as concrete and pavement.
The Bondi 9 isn’t the most minimalist or lightweight-looking shoe, but that’s part of its appeal. You’re getting a shoe designed around cushioning and protection rather than a barely-there feel.
Best for: Long walks, pavement, maximum cushioning, and people who like a substantial shoe.
Keep in mind: If you prefer lightweight, low-profile sneakers, the Bondi 9 may feel like more shoe than you need.
2. Brooks Ghost 18 – Best Everyday Walking Shoe
The Brooks Ghost 18 is the shoe I’d put near the top of the list if you want something versatile enough for everyday walking.
Brooks specifically lists walking among the Ghost 18’s intended uses, along with daily running. It combines soft, dynamic cushioning with balanced support and a secure heel.
That combination makes it easy to use for much more than your daily walk. You can wear it for errands, travel, treadmill sessions, or a full day when you’re constantly moving around.
The Ghost 18 uses nitrogen-infused DNA LOFT v3 cushioning, designed to provide softer landings while remaining responsive during toe-off. Its breathable air-mesh upper also helps keep the shoe comfortable during extended wear.
Best for: Everyday 12k steps, errands, travel, and walkers who want balanced cushioning.
Keep in mind: It’s a neutral/balanced shoe, so someone specifically looking for strong stability support may prefer a model such as the Adrenaline GTS 25.
3. New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080v15 – Best for Soft Comfort
The New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080v15 is another excellent choice if you like a soft, cushioned feeling underneath your feet.
New Balance describes the 1080v15 as an extra-cushioned shoe for everyday and long runs. The latest version uses Infinion Foam and weighs about 261 grams in the men’s version listed by New Balance.
It also comes in several widths, including narrow, standard, wide, and extra-wide. That selection of widths is a major advantage if standard-width shoes tend to feel too restrictive.
The 1080v15 also has a perforated mesh upper for breathability and a rubber outsole for traction. New Balance says the shoe has received the APMA Seal of Acceptance.
Best for: Long walks, soft cushioning, wider feet, and people who want a plush everyday shoe.
Keep in mind: The soft cushioning won’t appeal to everyone. Some walkers prefer a firmer, more grounded feeling.
4. ASICS GEL-NIMBUS 27 – Best for Plush Cushioning
If your ideal walking shoe feels plush and protective, take a look at the ASICS GEL-NIMBUS 27.
The GEL-NIMBUS 27 combines FF BLAST PLUS ECO cushioning with PureGEL technology. The result is a soft ride designed to make repeated foot strikes feel more comfortable.
It’s particularly appealing for people who aren’t trying to walk as quickly as possible. If your 12k steps are accumulated through leisurely neighborhood walks, shopping, commuting, and everyday activities, a plush shoe can be a very comfortable option.
Testing and comparing the GEL-NIMBUS 27 with the HOKA Bondi 9 found that both shoes provide strong protection, stability, and comfort, although the ASICS has a softer, more plush ride while the Bondi provides a somewhat more energetic feel.
Best for: Plush cushioning, leisurely long walks, and people who prioritize softness.
Keep in mind: Extremely soft shoes aren’t automatically better for everyone. Your personal preference and stability needs still matter.
5. HOKA Clifton 11 – Best Lightweight HOKA
Love the cushioning of HOKA but don’t want something as substantial as the Bondi? The HOKA Clifton 11 is worth a look.
The Clifton is designed to give you plenty of cushioning while keeping the overall shoe feeling lighter and more streamlined.
That can make a noticeable difference when you’re walking every day. A shoe that feels comfortable during your first mile can become annoying if it feels unnecessarily heavy by mile five.
The Clifton 11 is also versatile enough for travel and everyday wear, making it a practical option if you don’t want separate shoes for walking and casual activities.
Current comparisons between the Clifton 11 and Brooks Ghost 18 highlight the Clifton’s lighter feel and cushioning, while the Ghost provides a more grounded and stable sensation.
Best for: Lightweight cushioning, travel, daily walks, and people who dislike bulky shoes.
Keep in mind: If stability is your main priority, you may prefer one of the supportive shoes later on this list.
6. Brooks Adrenaline GTS 25 – Best for Stability
Not everyone needs a stability shoe, but if you prefer a more structured and supportive feel, the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 25 deserves attention.
The Adrenaline GTS line is designed around stability while retaining cushioning, making it a particularly interesting option for people who feel more comfortable when their shoe has additional structure.
This can be useful when your daily routine involves a lot of walking rather than a single short session. Instead of choosing a shoe solely because it feels soft, you can look for a combination of cushioning and stability.
The Adrenaline GTS 25 is also among the supportive models recommended in recent 2026 footwear coverage for extended time on your feet.
Best for: Walkers who prefer stability and a more structured shoe.
Keep in mind: Stability shoes aren’t automatically better. If you don’t need additional support, a neutral shoe may feel more natural.
7. Nike Pegasus 41 – Best for Versatility
The Nike Pegasus 41 is the pick I’d make for someone who doesn’t want a shoe exclusively for walking.
It’s a versatile trainer that can handle walking, gym sessions, casual wear, and even occasional running. That’s useful if your 12k steps aren’t coming from dedicated walks alone.
For example, you might walk to work, spend the afternoon running errands, take a treadmill session, and still want to wear the same pair.
Its responsive character also makes it a good alternative if you find extremely soft walking shoes feel sluggish.
Best for: Walk-and-run routines, gym sessions, errands, and people who want one versatile sneaker.
Keep in mind: If your only priority is maximum softness for slow, long walks, a shoe such as the Bondi 9 or GEL-NIMBUS 27 may be more appealing.
8. Saucony Triumph 22 – Best for Long, Cushioned Walks
The Saucony Triumph 22 is a great choice if you want plenty of cushioning without necessarily going for the most maximal-looking shoe possible.
It’s built around Saucony’s PWRRUN+ cushioning and is designed for daily mileage. That makes it a natural candidate for people who regularly spend a significant amount of time walking.
One of the things I like about this type of shoe for 12k steps is the balance between comfort and responsiveness. You want enough cushioning to absorb repeated impact, but you don’t necessarily want to feel like your feet are sinking into the pavement.
Best for: Long walks, daily mileage, and walkers who want cushioned but responsive footwear.
Keep in mind: The fit should be your deciding factor when comparing it with similarly cushioned shoes.
9. Adidas Ultraboost 5 – Best for Walking and Everyday Style
If you want a walking shoe that doesn’t necessarily look like a traditional walking shoe, the adidas Ultraboost 5 is an appealing option.
It’s especially useful for people who spend their day moving between different activities. You can wear it for your morning walk, commute, shopping, and casual outings without feeling like you’ve changed into a specialized piece of exercise equipment.
The cushioning also makes it appropriate for people who accumulate steps throughout the day rather than completing all 12,000 at once.
Best for: Everyday walking, travel, casual outfits, and people who want a stylish athletic shoe.
Keep in mind: Style shouldn’t override fit. A fashionable shoe that doesn’t suit your feet won’t suddenly become comfortable because it looks good.
10. ASICS GEL-KAYANO 31 – Best for Support and Stability
The ASICS GEL-KAYANO 31 is another strong option if you want a more supportive walking shoe.
It uses ASICS’ 4D GUIDANCE SYSTEM to provide adaptive stability, while FF BLAST PLUS ECO cushioning and PureGEL technology are designed to provide a smoother, more comfortable stride.
The shoe also has an external heel counter intended to help keep the foot stable. This makes it particularly interesting for walkers who like to feel that their foot is securely held in place.
Compared with the GEL-NIMBUS 27, the Kayano 31 is the more support-oriented choice. If you love the soft feel of ASICS but want more structure, this is the model I’d investigate first.
Best for: Stability, structured support, and long periods on your feet.
Keep in mind: More support isn’t necessarily better for everyone. Your foot type and individual comfort should guide your choice.
11. New Balance Fresh Foam X 860v15 – Best Supportive New Balance
If you like New Balance but want more support than the 1080v15 provides, consider the New Balance Fresh Foam X 860v15.
The 860v15 combines Fresh Foam X cushioning with New Balance’s Stability Plane technology. It also has a rocker profile designed to help with transitions through the stride.
Another major advantage is its range of widths. Depending on the version, the shoe is available in options ranging from narrow to extra-wide, making it easier to find a fit that works for different foot shapes.
For someone doing 12k steps every day, the combination of cushioning and structure is what makes this model stand out.
Best for: Stability, everyday walking, wider feet, and people who want a supportive New Balance.
Keep in mind: The structured feel may be unnecessary if you prefer a soft, neutral shoe.

How I Chose Walking Shoes for 12k Steps
I wouldn’t choose a shoe simply because it’s labeled a “walking shoe.” Many running shoes make excellent walking shoes because they’re designed to handle repeated impact and long periods of movement.
For a 12k-step routine, these are the features I’d pay the most attention to.
I Don’t buy solely for looks. A beautiful sneaker isn’t worth much if it causes discomfort after an hour.
I try shoes on later in the day. Feet can swell somewhat during the day, so a shoe that feels perfect first thing in the morning may feel different later.
I give my toes some space. Your toes shouldn’t be pressed tightly against the front or sides of the shoe.
I think about my walking surface. Walking primarily on concrete is different from walking on a treadmill, trails, or softer surfaces.
I Don’t automatically choose maximum cushioning. Some people love a soft, plush ride, while others feel more comfortable with a firmer, more responsive shoe.
I break in my routine gradually. Even excellent shoes can’t completely compensate for suddenly increasing your walking volume.
I pay attention to how my feet feel. If a shoe repeatedly causes rubbing, pressure, numbness, or pain, don’t force yourself to “get used to it.” Try a different size, width, or model.
My Final Thoughts
Getting to 12,000 steps every day becomes much easier when walking feels comfortable rather than like another chore.
There isn’t one perfect shoe for everyone. The best choice depends on what your feet need and how you prefer your shoes to feel.
